Sydney solicitor allegedly stole $15m from clients for gambling
A Sydney solicitor has been charged with stealing nearly $15 million from clients to fund his gambling activities.
A solicitor from Sydney, Benjamin Paul Reid, aged 45, has been charged with theft after allegedly defrauding his clients of approximately $15 million. The charges stem from an extensive investigation by the Financial Crimes Squad, which began in September last year following a referral from the NSW Law Society. The court heard that between April 2023 and February 2025, Reid accessed multiple business and trust accounts, diverting funds to his own use for gambling purposes.
During his court appearance, Reid faced four counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception. The police detailed how the solicitor allegedly manipulated the accounts, leading to significant financial loss for his clients. Arrested at Maroubra Police Station, Reid was granted bail on stringent conditions including a prohibition on working in any financial capacity and refraining from gambling-related activities.
Reid's case has raised concerns within the legal community regarding ethical and financial oversight in the profession. As he is due to return to court on March 12, the situation underlines the importance of continuous monitoring and accountability in law practices, especially concerning financial transactions. This case might lead to discussions on revising regulatory measures to prevent future occurrences of such fraudulent activities within the solicitors' domain.
