In Napo and Loja, 125 mining concessions have been suspended, and 105 processing plants have been notified in El Oro

The Ecuadorian government has suspended 125 mining concessions in Napo and Loja and notified 105 processing plants in El Oro due to environmental concerns.

The Ecuadorian government has announced the suspension of 125 mining concessions across the provinces of Napo and Loja, along with notifications to cease operations for 105 processing plants in El Oro. This action follows the implementation of resolution 005, which was issued by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE) on February 2, aimed at tackling environmental pollution in the region.

The MAE's decision to halt mining activities around the Napo River basin is rooted in concerns over environmental contamination. Specific studies have revealed high levels of heavy metals, including copper, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and cyanide, in the vicinity of affected areas. This contamination poses a significant risk to the local ecosystems and communities relying on the rivers Calera and Amarillo for their water resources.

As of February 25, the MAE reported that 43 out of 51 concessions in Napo and 82 out of 100 concessions in Loja have been suspended. These regulatory measures highlight the government's increasing focus on environmental protection and sustainability in response to the concerns raised by local communities and environmental advocacy groups.
