Heavy snowfall, high wind warnings issued for much of southern Alberta

Southern Alberta is facing severe weather with heavy snowfall and high wind warnings, particularly affecting areas northwest of Calgary and the Icefields Parkway.

A significant weather change is expected in southern Alberta, with Calgary set to experience a high of 11 C but facing a drastic drop in temperatures overnight. The region could see up to 30 cm of snow, with Calgary itself only projected to receive about 7 cm by late Friday. Meanwhile, a yellow snowfall warning has been issued for larger areas northwest of the city, indicating challenging conditions for residents and travelers alike.

The Icefields Parkway, a key route for tourists, is particularly at risk, with forecasts suggesting more than 30 cm of snow accompanied by wind gusts reaching 50 km/h. This combination raises concerns over visibility and road conditions, prompting Environment Canada to advise drivers to be cautious when traveling. The weather advisory highlights both snow accumulation and strong winds, which could lead to dangerous driving scenarios.

In Edmonton, flurries are expected, with winds potentially gusting up to 80 km/h, causing near-zero visibility in some situations. Weather patterns also suggest the possibility of lightning, thunder, and small hail during the most intense snow squalls, adding to the unpredictability of the storm system affecting southern Alberta in the coming days.
