How the assembly members voted to approve the law to strengthen the mining and energy sectors

The Ecuadorian National Assembly has approved a law aimed at strengthening the mining and energy sectors during a second debate.

In a significant development for Ecuador's economic landscape, the National Assembly approved the Organic Law for the Strengthening of the Strategic Sectors of Mining and Energy in a second debate. This vote, which took place during session number 074 on February 26, 2026, at the Universidad Ecotec in Samborondón, was conducted urgently in response to economic concerns. The assembly members voted in two blocks, starting with articles 1-28 along with the first and second general provisions and a unique transitory provision.

The proposal, initiated by Anthony Becerra from the ruling party Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN), received necessary support, amassing the required 77 votes. This backing was primarily from the government coalition, alongside contributions from three legislators expelled from the Pachakutik party, six former members of the correísmo movement, and two independent allied representatives. The approval marks a key step in legislative actions aimed at propelling the economic sectors that are crucial for the country's financial health and energy sustainability.

On the opposition side, representatives from the Revolución Ciudadana party, as well as several legislators from Pachakutik and some independents, opposed the motion, reflecting deep political divisions within the assembly. The law's enaction is expected to facilitate legislative measures that enhance the operational capabilities and regulatory framework of the mining and energy sectors, which are vital for attracting investment and fostering sustainable development in Ecuador.
