In July 2025, a Franco-Egyptian archaeological team successfully retrieved 22 monumental blocks from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, which belong to the iconic Lighthouse of Alexandria. This significant discovery occurred in the eastern port of Alexandria, Egypt, and heralds the reemergence of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a structure that has fascinated historians and tourists alike for centuries.

The recovered blocks, which had lain submerged for over 1,600 years, were part of the original monumental entrance to the lighthouse. The initiative aims to utilize high-precision 3D scans to virtually reconstruct this ancient wonder, reviving a historical symbol that played a crucial role in maritime navigation for centuries. Such technological applications not only help preserve history but also allow for greater public engagement with archaeological findings.

The underwater operation successfully extracted essential architectural elements, including ceremonial door lintels, door jambs, and invaluable pavement slabs. Each of these massive blocks weighs between 70 and 80 tons, underscoring the engineering prowess of the ancient builders and the significance of this discovery for understanding ancient Mediterranean architecture and its influence on contemporary society.
