A new literary award competes with the Planeta and the Nobel: it awards one million euros

A new literary award launched in Spain, the Aena Narrative Prize, aims to boost literature in Latin America by awarding one million euros for the best narrative work published last year.

Today, Aena, the company managing Spanish airports, announced the establishment of the Aena Narrative Prize, designed to enhance literature in Hispanic America by offering a substantial reward of one million euros for the best narrative published in the previous year. Additionally, each of the four finalists will receive thirty thousand euros, creating significant motivation for authors to contribute to the literary landscape. The award aims to recognize not only the winning author's efforts but also the potential for future sales through a percentage of the royalties from subsequent book sales.

The initiative, branded with the motto "Reading is Flying," collaborates with the Gabo Foundation and the Vargas Llosa Chair, organizations established by two renowned Nobel Prize winners from South America, Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. This partnership illustrates a profound commitment to promoting literary excellence and fostering a vibrant literary community in the region. The prominence of such esteemed figures associated with the award further elevates its importance and visibility.

This new prize stands in competition with existing prestigious awards like the Planeta Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature, potentially reshaping the literary award landscape in the Spanish-speaking world. By prioritizing contemporary narrative works and incentivizing writers, it seeks to inspire a new generation of authors and broaden the appreciation of literary contributions from Hispanic America on global platforms.
