Cellmate detained after inmate convicted of sexual assault found dead at California prison
California prison officials are investigating the homicide of an inmate, John Cisneros, found dead in his cell, with his cellmate detained for questioning.
California State Prison, Sacramento, is currently investigating the death of inmate John Cisneros, aged 49, who was found unresponsive in his cell on February 23. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, leading to his pronouncement of death shortly before 10 p.m. local time. Subsequent investigations have categorized the incident as a homicide, prompting an inquiry involving multiple agencies, including the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
His cellmate, 34-year-old Irvin Sanchez, has been detained as a precautionary measure and placed in restricted housing during the ongoing investigation by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit. The probing agencies, including the Office of the Inspector General, aim to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Cisneros’ death while the Coroner’s Office is in the process of determining the cause and manner of death, a procedure expected to take at least six months.
Cisneros was previously convicted of sexual assault, an aspect that could potentially influence the incident's context and the investigation's focus. The ramifications of this case extend beyond the individual tragedy, reflecting broader issues of safety and violence within the prison system and raising questions about inmate welfare and the protocols in place to protect vulnerable individuals incarcerated for serious offenses.
