"I have never had Lei Rouanet in Carnival," says Margareth Menezes about accusation in TCU
Cultural Minister Margareth Menezes stated she has never used resources from the Lei Rouanet for Carnival performances, following an accusation regarding her participation in a Carnival block in Salvador.
Cultural Minister Margareth Menezes publicly addressed accusations regarding her involvement in Carnival block events by stating that she has never used resources from the Lei Rouanet law for such performances. Her comments came after a request for an investigation was filed with the Tribunal de Contas da UniΓ£o (TCU) questioning potential conflicts of interest related to her role with the company Pau Viola Cultura e Entretenimento, which is responsible for the Carnival block 'Os Mascarados'. Menezes emphasized, 'I have never had Lei Rouanet in Carnival, neither before nor now.'
The investigation request was submitted by Deputy Attorney General Lucas Rocha Furtado, who seeks to determine if there is a conflict of interest in the relationship between Menezes and Pau Viola, especially considering that the company has previously secured funding through the Lei Rouanet for eight projects during her current administration. Additionally, it was revealed that Margareth was reportedly set to receive R$ 290,000 for her performance in Carnival 2026, a figure her team clarifies includes her fee, as well as expenses for musicians, production, transportation, and costumes.
This case highlights ongoing scrutiny of public officials and their financial dealings, particularly concerning funding mechanisms like the Lei Rouanet, which aims to support cultural initiatives in Brazil. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for Menezes' political standing and the operations of cultural funding in the country, as it may either validate or challenge the integrity of the funding processes related to public officialsβ engagements in the cultural sector.
