Lithuania, together with other EU countries, signed a declaration on the establishment of the 'EastInvest' platform

Lithuania's Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekūnas emphasized the need for concrete actions at the EU level to bolster the resilience of Eastern border regions, specifically in light of challenges posed by nearby Russia and Belarus.

The recent declaration signed by Lithuania and several other EU countries marks a strategic effort to address the unique economic, social, and security challenges faced by nations bordering Russia and Belarus. Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekūnas highlighted the importance of the European Commission's focus on Eastern border regions, while urging for specific, actionable measures at the EU level to enhance regional resilience. Given the distinct challenges that Baltic states encounter, these actions are framed as essential for a strategic and robust EU response.

Vaitiekūnas pointed out that the current dynamics present considerable pressure on these EU member states, necessitating an effective financial framework to support defense, preparedness, resilience, and security capacities. He stressed that the next multiannual financial program for 2028–2034 should include additional financial support that is targeted towards these areas, ensuring economic, social, and territorial convergence amongst the affected regions. This future funding is vital not just for defense, but also aims to promote stability in the socio-economic fabric of the Baltic states and their immediate neighbors.

This initiative is not only significant for the Baltic states, but it also reflects the European Union's responsive strategy towards regional challenges. By proposing dedicated financial measures to address these vulnerabilities, Lithuania and its partners aim to fortify their positions and collaboratively navigate the heightened vulnerabilities presented by nearby geopolitical tensions. The undertaking of this declaration may serve as a cornerstone for future EU policy and funding initiatives in addressing security in Eastern Europe, positioning these nations to better withstand external pressures.
