Escape from Puerto Vallarta Prison due to operation against ‘El Mencho’: 4 inmates recaptured, says García Harfuch
Four individuals were recaptured after escaping from the Puerto Vallarta State Prison, coinciding with an arrest operation against the notorious drug lord ‘El Mencho’.
On February 22, a significant event occurred at the Puerto Vallarta State Prison when a coordinated operation aimed at capturing the infamous drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho', led to a violent escape for 23 inmates. The operation was in response to intelligence regarding 'El Mencho' as he was considered a critical target due to his leadership of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Tragically, a prison guard was also killed during the escape, underscoring the chaotic nature of that day.
Following the escape, authorities initiated a manhunt for the fled individuals, but by Thursday, four of the escapees were successfully recaptured in an operation led by the Mexican Navy in coordination with state security personnel and local authorities. The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, stated that ongoing investigations aim to locate the remaining escapees, indicating that this incident remains a high-priority issue for law enforcement officials in the region.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Mexican authorities in managing prison security, particularly in relation to powerful drug cartels. As 'El Mencho' remains a highly influential figure in organized crime, the events surrounding his operation and the subsequent prison break raise serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of current security measures. The government’s response and continued investigations may play a crucial role in restoring order and preventing similar incidents in the future.
