A Common Mistake with Medical Patches That Could Cause a Deadly Dose

A warning has been issued regarding the improper use of medical patches that could lead to a dangerous overdose or underdose of active ingredients.

The pharmacists' chamber in Lower Saxony, Germany, has issued a warning about the misuse of medical patches, stating that improper application can result in patients receiving either overdoses or underdoses of the active substance. Medical patches are designed to deliver active ingredients, such as strong pain relievers and nicotine for smoking cessation, gradually and at a consistent rate into the bloodstream, providing a convenient alternative to pills or injections, particularly in chronic conditions.

Pharmacists emphasize the importance of correctly opening the packaging along the perforated line provided, as using scissors or tearing the package haphazardly can damage the patch, affecting its ability to release the active ingredient effectively. Furthermore, cutting patches in half to reduce dosage is strictly discouraged, as it can alter the absorption rate and lead to dosing imbalances, which could be detrimental to patients' health.

Another critical point highlighted is the choice of application site on the skin. The area should be intact, free from any wounds, inflammation, eczema, allergies, scars, or tattoos. It is recommended that the skin is clean, dry, and devoid of hair and oils to ensure optimal patch performance. These guidelines are essential in preventing adverse health effects related to the use of these medical devices.
