Icy rain caused serious problems in Tallinn's tram traffic
Icy rain severely disrupted tram traffic in Tallinn, leading to all trams being halted and public transportation affected.
Icy rain in Tallinn has caused significant disruptions in tram traffic, compelling the transport authorities to switch to a free driving schedule. As of Thursday afternoon, all trams were reported to be at a standstill, and passengers were advised to expect delays across other public transport services due to challenging weather conditions. Andrei Novikov, a member of Tallinn City Transport's board, indicated that tram stoppages could last anywhere from five minutes to up to an hour depending on the situation.
The icy conditions have created problems with the electrical connection between trams and the overhead contact network, leading to interruptions in service. Novikov noted that the accumulation of ice could cause power outages that require a reset of electronic systems in newer tram models. Interestingly, older trams are more reliable under these circumstances, and currently, one of the older trams is being utilized to clear the tracks by traversing all the lines to aid in the restoration of the tram service.
The incident underscores the challenges that severe weather conditions can impose on urban transit systems, highlighting the need for effective contingency plans in place. As authorities work to restore normal service, the situation may prompt discussions on how to better prepare for such weather-related disruptions in the future, ensuring that residents can rely on public transportation even during adverse conditions.
