Former USP medical student who embezzled R$ 927 thousand from colleagues suffers new sentence
A former medical student from USP, Alicia Duddy Muller Veiga, has received a new conviction for embezzling funds from a graduation committee.
Alicia Duddy Muller Veiga, a former medical student from the University of SΓ£o Paulo (USP), has been sentenced again by the SΓ£o Paulo justice system for embezzling R$ 937,000 from her graduation committee. Currently a licensed physician, Alicia is facing two criminal proceedings regarding her misconduct. In July 2024, she was initially sentenced to five years of semi-open imprisonment for the same crime, although she has appealed the decision, which is still awaiting further judgment under confidentiality.
The latter charges stem from accusations of attempting to defraud a lottery in an effort to recover the funds she previously embezzled. On February 24, she was sentenced to an additional three-year term in the same semi-open regime. This case has garnered attention due to the significant amount of money involved and the nature of the crimes committed by someone in the medical profession, raising concerns about ethical standards among medical practitioners in Brazil.
The investigation into Alicia began after a fellow student reported the missing funds. The gravity of her actions has not only led to legal repercussions but also poses questions about trust and accountability in educational institutions and among those who will care for public health. The outcomes of these ongoing cases may potentially impact Alicia's medical career and the broader perception of integrity within the health field in Brazil.
