Heavy turmoil at Surat's steel plant, arson and vandalism; police carried out baton charges

A violent protest erupted at the ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel plant in Surat, Gujarat, leading to police intervention and widespread vandalism by contract workers.

On Thursday, a massive uproar broke out at the ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel (AM/NS) plant located in Surat, Gujarat. Approximately 5,000 contract employees from L&T initiated a protest demanding wage increases and other concessions, which quickly escalated into violence. The protestors set fire to four parked two-wheelers in the plant area and vandalized several cars. They also inflicted damage on three firefighting vehicles owned by the company and destroyed advanced equipment at the entry and exit gates, along with furniture and fans in the offices. The disturbance caused chaos in the entire area, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement.
