Aging Society: Demographic Change Forces Freising to Act
Freising is implementing measures to address the increasing population of elderly residents, particularly those over 80, by introducing a pilot transitional care program.
The demographic shift in Freising is leading to significant changes in the local community, as projections indicate that by 2025, there will be over 9,400 residents aged 80 and older, and this number is expected to rise dramatically to approximately 16,000 by 2050. In response to these statistics, Landrat Helmut Petz emphasized the necessity for the district to proactively respond to this demographic evolution, stating, 'We must stay ahead of the wave.' This urgency has led to the establishment of a new transitional care program intended to support elderly residents in emergency situations and provide immediate assistance.
This pilot project, which is set to begin in early April, has a budget of €500,000, of which €375,000 will be provided by the state of Bavaria. The program aims to offer low-threshold and uncomplicated support for individuals during times of crisis, distinguishing itself from existing home care services by filling a specific gap rather than competing with them. Social Services Director Werner Wagensonner clarified that the transitional care is designed as a temporary solution that allows for a smooth transition for patients discharged from hospitals back into their communities, ensuring that their care needs are met without bureaucratic hurdles.
The introduction of this transitional care initiative represents just one part of a broader strategy aimed at addressing the needs of an aging population in Freising. As local authorities plan for the future, investing in such programs will be crucial in ensuring that the growing numbers of elderly residents receive the support they require, thereby enhancing their quality of life and easing the burden on the healthcare system. It reflects a recognition of the demographic trends and a commitment to responsive and effective community care solutions.
