The religious images and verses that “El Mencho” had at the time of his capture
During a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexican authorities discovered religious objects and a biblical text in the residence of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
On February 22, a significant military operation was conducted in the municipality of Tapalpa, Jalisco, leading to the capture of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as "El Mencho," the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities from the Mexican Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) raided a residence within a country club complex, where they uncovered various religious artifacts. Among the items found were candles and images of the Virgin of Guadalupe, San Judas Tadeo, and San Charbel, all figures emblematic of popular Catholic devotion in Mexico.
The inspection revealed a sheet containing a text believed to be from Psalm 91, which speaks to divine protection and has been often recited by individuals in perilous situations. The verses included comforting phrases such as "My shelter, my refuge, my God, in whom I trust" and "Though a thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, you will not be harmed." The juxtaposition of these religious items within the context of a criminal operation raises questions about the intersection of faith and crime in Mexico, particularly within cartels that often utilize religious symbolism to legitimize their actions or seek protection.
This discovery illustrates the complex nature of the CJNG and its leadership, as El Mencho's reliance on religious imagery may reflect an attempt to seek solace or protection amid ongoing violence. It also highlights the pervasive influence of narcotrafficking organizations in Mexican society, where the lines between faith, culture, and crime frequently blur, creating a narrative that captivates part of the public's imagination while also instilling fear among communities affected by cartel violence.
