Samba, Herring and a Grand Party: See How Estonians Celebrated the Republic's Anniversary in Tenerife
Estonians living and vacationing in Tenerife came together to celebrate their country's 108th anniversary with traditional food, music, and a gala.
Celebrating the 108th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, over 500 Estonians gathered in Tenerife, more than 5000 kilometers from their homeland, to mark the occasion. The festivities took place on February 24, demonstrating the unity of Estonians regardless of where they reside. The day started with traditional Estonian snacks, such as kiluvΓ΅ileib (herring sandwiches), and included singing, culminating in a festive gala that fostered a sense of warmth and community among participants.
The celebration started before noon with a traditional Estonian parade led by Tenerife24, which wound through the island's busiest streets. Attendees included not only those living permanently in Tenerife but also visitors looking to enjoy the winter sun. Excitement filled the air at the Thai Secret outdoor restaurant, where blue-black-white flags waved, greetings were exchanged in Estonian, and attendees felt a nostalgic sense of home, albeit in a much warmer climate.
The concert kicked off with a formal address titled "Manifest to All Estonians in the World" emphasizing the importance of national unity and identity. This event reflects the depth of Estonian cultural life and community spirit among expatriates, showcasing how traditions persist and thrive even far from home, reinforcing bonds among those who share a common heritage.
