"We hope to have the Ukrainian Embassy in Ecuador fully operational this year," says ambassador Yuriy Polyukhovych

Ukrainian Ambassador Yuriy Polyukhovych anticipates the full operation of the Ukrainian Embassy in Ecuador this year amidst the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has reached its fifth year, with no clear path towards reconciliation. As both sides continue to deplete their military resources, the possibility of reaching an agreement appears to be becoming the most viable option to end the hostilities. While Moscow is focused on asserting control over the eastern region of Donbas, Kyiv remains reluctant to relinquish any more territory without security assurances from its foreign allies, particularly during discussions with the United States, which is looking to act as a mediator in these negotiations.

Despite adverse weather conditions that have posed challenges for both sides—from severe frost to floods in the trenches—Russian forces continue to launch over a hundred assaults daily along the eastern and southern fronts of Ukraine. However, their advances in the eastern province of Donetsk have been slow, with reports indicating that Russia only captured 33 square kilometers in the third week of February, marking its lowest territorial gains since the beginning of 2026, as highlighted by Oleksandr Kovalenko from an information resistance group.

The establishment of a fully operational Ukrainian Embassy in Ecuador signifies Ukraine's intentions to strengthen its diplomatic presence and relations in the region. As the international community watches closely, this move could potentially foster deeper ties and collaboration in support of Ukraine, especially as it approaches new phases in the ongoing conflict. Ensuring that ambassadors like Polyukhovych can operate effectively will be crucial for Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts as it navigates this complex geopolitical landscape.
