"Sodra" has sent reminders to 39,000 people regarding benefits: otherwise they will not receive money

Many residents are losing their entitled benefits simply due to not submitting applications on time.

In Lithuania, the social insurance fund "Sodra" has sent out reminders to approximately 39,000 individuals who risk missing out on their benefits due to late applications. A significant number of residents fail to claim their entitled sickness benefits, largely because they do not submit their requests within the required timeframe. It is vital to understand that not everyone issued sick leave certificates is automatically eligible for sickness benefits, especially if they lack sufficient social insurance contributions or do not meet other legal requirements.

The application process for claiming sickness benefits requires individuals to submit their request just once, and it remains valid indefinitely for future claims, such as subsequent illnesses or when caring for a sick family member. This systematic approach aims to ease the burden on applicants but emphasizes the importance of timely submission. Applications can be made retroactively for one year, meaning that individuals can still claim benefits for earlier periods if they submit their request accordingly, as long as it is within the stipulated timeframe of twelve months after the end of their illness.

This situation not only highlights the challenges faced by individuals in navigating the bureaucratic process but also reflects broader issues related to social welfare enforcement in Lithuania. Ensuring that residents are properly informed about their rights and the procedural requirements is crucial to prevent loss of benefits and to support those in need during times of illness or family care responsibilities.
