M. Apostolaki: The Investigation was Orchestrated by New Democracy as a 'Cleansing of Responsibilities'
Milena Apostolaki accused New Democracy of orchestrating the investigation into the OPEKEPE scandal as a cover-up of responsibilities rather than a means of uncovering the truth.
During the discussion on the findings of the parliamentary investigation into the OPEKEPE scandal, Milena Apostolaki criticized New Democracy for orchestrating the investigation in a manner she described as a 'cleansing of responsibilities' instead of genuinely seeking the truth. She alleged that the party attempted to obscure facts similar to their approach to the wiretapping investigation, by excluding key witnesses and making unilateral decisions. Apostolaki emphasized the government's perceived attempts to conceal scandals by not allowing independent scrutiny to clarify the situation.
She pointed out that despite these attempts at concealment, justice has still prevailed, as evident by a significant ruling issued by a Single-Member Misdemeanor Court in Athens. The court's decision found several individuals guilty, without recognition of mitigating circumstances, for their involvement in the illegal use of the 'Predator' surveillance software. This verdict was seen as a vindication for PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, who had worked diligently to bring attention to the illicit surveillance issue and its broader implications for civil liberties in Greece.
Apostolaki further warned that the government's efforts to conclude the investigation committee's work prematurely won't erase the need for accountability. She stressed that the public would continue to demand transparency concerning the scandal and that the true narrative of events must come to light, regardless of governmental attempts to suppress it. The insistence on accountability indicates a growing demand within Greek society for clean governance and assurance that such scandals will not recur in the future.
