The State Police names this year's work priorities

The Latvian State Police emphasizes the need to combat crimes related to war justification and the use of aggressor symbols while urging public awareness to ensure national security.

The State Police of Latvia anticipates a challenging year ahead as it faces recurrent issues relating to criminal activities associated with the justification of war and the use of symbols by aggressors. During a press briefing, Police Chief Armands Ruks highlighted the importance of proactive measures by various responsible authorities, not only the police, to keep the public informed about individuals engaging in such criminal conduct. This is crucial as such actions pose a threat to Latvia's internal security.

Last year was described by Ruks as "full and intense" for the police force, yet he asserted that Latvia remains a relatively safe country. He cautioned, however, that the public cannot live under the illusion that crises will not occur, highlighting the necessity for individuals to be prepared to safeguard themselves. The official statistics revealed that a total of 34,787 criminal offenses were registered by the police last year, with additional offenses recorded by investigative bodies bringing the total to 37,373.

Particularly concerning is the reported increase in serious crimes, with specific severe offenses rising by 223 cases, while the count of other serious crimes saw a reduction of 675 cases. The highest rates of criminal offenses were documented in Daugavpils and Riga, reinforcing the need for ongoing vigilance and community engagement to maintain safety and security throughout the country.
