Red Cross issues avalanche warning after mild weather

The Red Cross warns of increased avalanche danger due to mild weather conditions affecting several regions of Norway, urging winter tourists to exercise caution.

The Red Cross in Norway has issued an alarming warning regarding the heightened risk of avalanches prompted by recent mild weather. Svein Ove Seim, the leader of the district council rescue corps in Hordaland, has highlighted that the new snow that has fallen recently rests on a weak layer, which can easily trigger an avalanche with even a slight load. This situation is particularly concerning for winter tourists engaging in mountain activities.

Seim further elaborates that this winter has been unusual, with periods of minimal snow and cold temperatures dominating the landscape. However, a significant change in weather is expected in the western mountain regions, where strong winds and mild weather accompanied by heavy rainfall are predicted over the next few days. This combination of factors is likely to exacerbate the avalanche risk, prompting officials to advise caution among those planning to travel in these areas during the winter break.

In response to these dangers, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has issued a red danger warning for substantial avalanche risk in various locales, including Hardanger, Voss, Indre Sogn, Jotunheimen, Indre Fjordane, Svartisen, Helgeland, and Svalbard. Hordaland Red Cross is on alert for rescue operations as a precautionary measure. Authorities are urging outdoor enthusiasts to be mindful and use their judgment to ensure their safety while enjoying winter activities.
