Israel responsible for most journalist killings in 2025 โ report
A report by the Committee to Protect Journalists reveals that Israel was implicated in a significant number of journalist deaths in 2025, primarily during the Gaza conflict.
A new report from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has revealed alarming statistics about journalist fatalities in 2025, with Israel being implicated in a staggering two-thirds of the deaths, primarily due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The data indicates that 129 media workers lost their lives globally, marking an unprecedented annual high that underscores the perilous conditions journalists face, particularly in conflict zones.
The report highlights that a total of 86 journalists were killed as a direct result of Israeli fire, with a significant majority of these casualties being Palestinian reporters operating in Gaza. Notably, CPJ noted that the deadliest single incident took place in Yemen during Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) airstrikes, demonstrating the extensive reach and impact of the violence on media personnel far beyond the immediate conflict zones.
In addition, CPJ documented that among the 47 killings classified as targeted assassinations, Israel accounted for 81%, raising questions about the accountability and transparency in investigations surrounding these incidents. The growing number of journalist deaths calls for urgent international scrutiny and action to protect media freedom and ensure the safety of those who risk their lives to report the truth.
