A Creative Solution to Daycare Indoor Air Quality Issues: Children in Jokioinen Took Over the Municipal Council Chamber

In response to significant indoor air quality problems at a daycare in Jokioinen, 55 children relocated to the municipal council chamber for a safer environment.

Indoor air quality issues persist across many municipalities in Finland, affecting approximately 6% of daycare buildings in 2023. The situation in Jokioinen, located in Kanta-Häme, reached a critical point at Teerimäki daycare, prompting the decision to relocate its 55 children to the municipal council chamber due to unsafe conditions. According to Minna Heinämäki, the director of early childhood education, the deteriorating air quality forced serious considerations for new facilities sooner than initially planned.

The move to the municipal council chamber was intended as a temporary solution while a new daycare facility is expected to be completed by 2028. The municipal chamber provided the needed space, enabling the children to continue their activities in a safer and healthier environment. Daycare director Marika Tuomola expressed relief at the transition, highlighting the clean air and adequate space as significant improvements for both staff and children, who can now engage more freely in their daily routines.

This creative approach to addressing a significant public health concern underscores the ongoing challenges municipalities face regarding building maintenance and child safety. It has raised awareness of the importance of ensuring safe indoor environments in educational facilities, especially amid growing concerns over the long-term impacts of poor air quality on children's health and development.
