Russia Significantly Increased Purchases of Optical Fiber Needed for Drones from China Last Year

Russia has significantly ramped up its purchases of optical fiber from China due to the cessation of domestic production following drone attacks on its manufacturing facilities.

Russia has halted its domestic production of optical fiber, relying entirely on imports from China. The only optical fiber manufacturing company in Russia, 'Optikovolokonnije sistemy' in Saransk, ceased operations following drone attacks in April and May of the previous year. According to Leonid Koniks, the head of 'ComNews Group', Russia now sources all its optical fiber from Chinese suppliers.

Last year, Russia accounted for 10.5% of the world's optical fiber purchases, a dramatic increase compared to previous years where it never exceeded 1%. In absolute terms, Russia is estimated to have consumed nearly 60 million kilometers of optical fiber, marking a significant uptick in demand as both Russia and Ukraine began utilizing fiber optic technology in FPV drones. Analysts highlight that drones equipped with optical fiber are harder to detect and can evade electronic warfare measures.

The shift in Russiaโ€™s sourcing strategy indicates a strategic adaptation to ongoing military challenges, reflecting a dependency on Chinese manufacturing capabilities. This situation raises concerns about the implications for global supply chains and the evolving dynamics of military technology in the context of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
