Keithy Kuuspu: More Important than Awards is Standing Out
Keithy Kuuspu discusses the significance of recognition in the arts, emphasizing that it aids artists in progressing to their next works.
Keithy Kuuspu, alongside fellow artist Katariin Mudist, has been awarded the main award in the field of visual and applied arts by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. However, both artists stress that the most important aspect of recognition is that it helps propel artists to their future projects. Their exhibition and performance gala titled 'Unfortunately, You Were Not Selected This Time' which took place at the Tartu Art House, creatively examined the themes of recognition, awards, and the humor found within both winning and losing in the arts.
The exhibition was structured around three distinct rooms: the Recognition Room, the Commission Room, and the Award Room. These spaces serve to explore various facets of recognition and its impact on artists and their careers. Mudist highlighted that it was essential for their work to reach beyond the confines of the art world; as part of the project, they also engaged with athletes and mothers to provide a broader perspective on the theme of recognition. They also invited 25 artists to contribute to the exhibition by creating awards that were presented as part of the artworks.
The project showcases how recognition plays a role not just in the arts but in various fields, and it encourages a dialogue about the nature of awards and validation in creative endeavors. Through humor and thoughtful engagement, Kuuspu and Mudist's work invites viewers to reconsider the importance of recognition and the meaningful connections it fosters between different disciplines.
