Former Mayor of Nazareth and Crime Organization Leader Charged with Stealing Tens of Millions from City Treasury
The former mayor of Nazareth, Ali Salam, and crime organization leader Samir Bakri have been charged with embezzling millions from the city's treasury between 2015 and 2025.
Today, charges were filed against Ali Salam, the former mayor of Nazareth, and Samir Bakri, the head of the Bakri crime organization. They, along with several other senior members of the organization, systematically siphoned off funds from the Nazareth municipality's budget over a period from 2015 to 2025. The scheme involved the exploitation of a security company that fell into debt, which was taken over by Bakri's associates to facilitate the fraud.
The charges include severe offenses such as the fraudulent diversion of public funds, extortion by threats, money laundering, tax violations, and bribery. The prosecution is seeking to confiscate approximately 61 million shekels from the bank accounts and assets of the accused, as well as to detain them until the conclusion of the proceedings. The case is significant, highlighting issues of corruption within local government and criminal organizations in Israel.
Further indictments are likely to follow as the investigation continues, indicating that the authorities are planning to pursue a broader crackdown on organized crime and corruption in the region. This case raises serious concerns regarding financial governance in local municipalities and the influence of crime syndicates on public officials.
