The oldest bookstore in Panevėžys faces a challenge: owners have approached the city mayor regarding the future of the historic building
The owners of Panevėžys' oldest bookstore have requested assistance from the city mayor to preserve the iconic establishment amidst difficulties in competing with online book sales and shopping centers.
The owners of the oldest bookstore in Panevėžys, Karolina Masiulytė-Paliulienė and Arūnas Povilas Paliulis, have officially approached the city mayor Loretą Masiliūnienę and city council members with a plea for support to help maintain their store. In a letter, they expressed their challenges in keeping the bookstore operational, highlighting their struggle as the last independent bookstore in the area. They acknowledged the pressure of competing against online book retailers and large commercial centers, which has made it increasingly difficult for them to sustain the business.
The owners revealed that the historic building housing the bookstore is currently up for sale, further complicating its future. They emphasized the need for any prospective new owners to respect the building's historical significance and continue its legacy as an essential symbol of the city. Given the cultural importance of the bookstore to the Panevėžys community, they are seeking solutions that will enable it to continue serving the community in its current form.
In their communication, the owners also provided details about the building's structure, noting that the first floor contains two commercial spaces while the second floor has three rented apartments. This layout suggests that the building serves multiple purposes, which may play a role in its future viability and the city’s considerations in preserving such meaningful local establishments. The emphasis on safeguarding the bookstore reflects a broader concern for the preservation of cultural heritage in the face of modern commercial pressures.
