EP Chair: The European Union must do more to stop Russia's 'shadow fleet'
European Parliament Chair Metsola emphasized the need for the EU to intensify efforts to halt Russia's shadow fleet, which is transporting sanctioned energy resources through European waters.
In a recent statement, the Chair of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, described the current situation concerning Russia's shadow fleet as unacceptable. She stressed the urgency for the European Union (EU) to take significant action to prevent these vessels from transporting energy resources that are under sanctions. This commentary is particularly relevant as the EU is working on implementing its 20th sanctions package against Russia, aimed at increasing pressure on the country due to its unwavering aggression towards Ukraine and the broader European landscape.
Metsola underscored that any potential for Russia to continue its war against Ukraine and Europe using resources that may indirectly or directly originate from the EU is intolerable. She has been vocal about the need for rapid progress in this area, stating that combating the shadow fleet is essential for maintaining the efficacy and integrity of the sanctions imposed against Russia. The implications of such an unchecked fleet could be detrimental, not just for Ukraine but also for the collective security of Europe.
When asked about plans to confiscate ships belonging to Russia's shadow fleet, Metsola noted that the EU has already identified vessels that are notably changing their flags and re-registering under different jurisdictions through dubious means. However, she acknowledged that the EU's response to this situation must be quicker, emphasizing that timely actions are imperative to mitigate the risks posed by these practices. This reflects an ongoing commitment from EU leadership to strengthen the measures against Russian aggression while simultaneously addressing the complexities involved in enforcing maritime regulations.
