South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has earmarked R848.2 billion for enhanced security and border control measures over the coming years.

In a significant move to bolster national security, South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced in Parliament that the government will allocate R848.2 billion for peace, security, and border protection across the nation. This budget will allow for a gradual increase in spending on security, which is expected to rise from R268.2 billion in 2025/26 to R291.2 billion by 2028/29. Such financial commitments indicate a strong governmental focus on addressing crime and enhancing public safety in the country.

Further details revealed that the Border Management Authority will receive an additional R990 million to hire 738 new personnel, aiming to strengthen border control throughout South Africa. This investment is aimed at mitigating illegal immigration and ensuring the integrity of the nation's borders. Similarly, both the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will each receive R1 billion through the Criminal Assets Recovery Account, signaling a concerted effort to utilize recovered criminal assets to fund operations that could combat rising crime rates effectively.

Additionally, Defence operations will benefit from an extra R2.7 billion budget, which is crucial for maintaining capabilities, including those of the South African Air Force's fighter jets. Overall, this budgetary announcement reflects a strategic initiative by the South African government to prioritize public safety and national security as critical components of its long-term development plan, amidst ongoing concerns regarding crime in the country.
