Wing Over the Garden. How a Small Liberec Villa Transformed into a Modern Family Home

A 1914 villa in Liberec, originally designed by architect Jakob Schmeissner, has been sensitively renovated to serve as a modern family home, showcasing its unique details and historical significance.

In a quiet part of Liberec, a small villa from 1914, designed by architect Jakob Schmeissner, has undergone a thoughtful transformation. Known for his collaboration with the notable Liebieg family, Schmeissner’s original design, while charming, had remained unobtrusive. The meticulous renovation breathed new life into the house, now filled with distinctive details, telling a layered story of its past while functioning as a modern dwelling.

The renovation work, led by atakarchitekti architects Jana Janďourková Medlíková and Michaela Doležalová, began in 2020 and continued until its completion in 2024, though the family officially moved in only in July 2026. The house is now a vibrant home for a family of four, highlighted by its green aesthetic and wooden features, marking a successful merging of the old and new in architectural design.

Despite its initial placement that compromised some privacy, the villa's unique urban character was preserved and enhanced through this renovation. The story emphasizes how historical architecture can be revitalized to serve contemporary needs while respecting its past, illustrating the importance of thoughtful design in urban settings.
