‘Kalo Macbeth’, Transfer of ‘Macbeth’ to a Stateless Dystopia

The play 'Kalo Macbeth' reinterprets Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' in a dystopian future where a massive prison has been established to contain powerful criminals and anarchists.

In a distant future, a dire situation emerges where 158 prisons become overcrowded with violent felons and anarchists, necessitating the construction of a massive detention center called Serengeti Bay, encased behind 80-meter high walls. The play 'Kalo Macbeth', directed by Go Sun-woong, revitalizes Shakespeare’s tragedy in this anarchic setting, emphasizing themes of power, violence, guilt, and revenge while incorporating elements of humor and vibrant action sequences. The narrative promises an ultra-fast-paced experience, juxtaposing the weighty themes of the classic tale with lighter comedic interludes akin to silent films.

The rehearsals for 'Kalo Macbeth', which is the opening performance of the 20th anniversary project for the theater company Geukgongjakso Mabongjin, have revealed the demanding actions required of the actors. Notably, safety gear was worn by the cast during practice, indicating the intense preparation involved in executing intricate fight scenes safely. Despite a history of injuries during the original production in 2010, the current cast, led once again by actor Kim Ho-sang in the role of Macbeth, has successfully navigated rigorous training to curate both thrilling and sustainable action sequences, showcasing the play’s evolution over the years.

As the performers embody the violent yet extravagant world of 'Kalo Macbeth', the production also breathes contemporary life into the classic text. The quick-witted dialogues and high-stakes swordplay draw viewers into a dynamic storytelling experience, aiming to resonate with modern audiences while celebrating the original’s dramatic arcs. By straddling the line between solemn tragedy and exuberant humor, 'Kalo Macbeth' offers a fresh perspective that encourages reflection on societal issues through the lens of a timeless narrative.
