Four migrants turned back at the border with Belarus
Lithuanian authorities report that four migrants attempting to illegally cross the border from Belarus have been turned back, marking a continuing trend of illegal migration in the region.
According to reports from Lithuanian authorities, four migrants attempting to cross illegally from Belarus were turned back at the Lithuanian border. Meanwhile, Latvian border guards did not turn back any illegal migrants on Wednesday, just as Polish officials reported no instances on Tuesday. This indicates a cautious approach towards managing the increasing migrant situation in the region, as several countries continue to deal with the influx of people trying to enter the European Union without authorization.
This year, Lithuania has not allowed a total of 35 illegal migrants to enter the country, which is part of a larger pattern of unauthorized crossings that have been spiking since 2021. In that year alone, there were over 1.6 thousand attempts to enter Lithuania illegally from Belarus. The situation has significantly deteriorated compared to previous years, with 1,002 similar incidents recorded two years ago, emphasizing the growing pressures on the borders of EU member states in the region.
The surge in illegal migration from Belarus to Eastern European countries is widely attributed to political manipulation by the Belarusian regime, which has been accused by Western governments of orchestrating this influx as a response to sanctions and political isolation from the West. This ongoing migrant crisis not only poses humanitarian challenges but also fuels political tensions and border security issues within the European Union, necessitating a coordinated response from member states to address the root causes and manage the flow of migrants.
