"Aro" sappers rushed to Marijampolė – a hand grenade and grenade detonator found in the basement of a house

A hand grenade and detonator were discovered in a house basement in Marijampolė, prompting a police operation and an investigation into illegal possession of explosives.

On Wednesday at around 1:30 PM, police reported the discovery of an object resembling an explosive device while electrical installation work was being conducted in the basement of a building on Draugystės Street in Marijampolė, Lithuania. Due to the potentially dangerous find, authorities initiated emergency protocol 'Skydas', which mobilizes specialized units to handle explosive devices safely.

At the site, team members from 'Aro', the special forces unit, located and secured what is believed to be an 'RG-42' hand grenade along with a grenade detonator and a pyrotechnic charge. These items pose significant risks not only to those working in the vicinity but also to nearby residents, necessitating swift and safe handling by trained professionals to avert any disaster.

Following the discovery, a preliminary investigation was launched regarding the illegal possession of explosives.
