Daily meat expense of ₹35,000 for Kuno's cheetahs, reveals government

The Madhya Pradesh government spends approximately ₹35,000 daily to feed cheetahs in Kuno National Park, as revealed in recent legislative assembly data.

The Madhya Pradesh government disclosed that it spends around ₹35,000 per day on purchasing goat meat for the cheetahs residing in Kuno National Park, which amounts to over ₹1.27 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25 alone. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav explained in the assembly that there is no separate budget head specifically for the cheetahs' food; rather, the expenses are drawn from the wildlife management budget. The total expenditure thus far stands at ₹1.27 million, indicating a significant investment in the maintenance of these animals.

Yadav further clarified that there is no fixed standard for the number of goats required daily, as it largely depends on the health and requirements of the cheetahs. This brings attention to the challenges of sustaining such wildlife in a managed environment, emphasizing the need for a dynamic approach based on the animals' health and habitat interaction.

The situation has raised concerns, particularly when Congress MLA Malhotra questioned what happens when cheetahs venture outside their designated territory. The government acknowledged that cheetahs living in the wild often cross the boundaries of Kuno, reaching rural areas in Gwalior, Shivpuri, Morena, and even Rajasthan, where they have been known to prey on local livestock, including goats and cattle. This raises significant questions about human-wildlife conflict and the measures in place to mitigate such issues while attempting to re-establish cheetah populations in India.
