A coral colony discovered by citizen scientists in Far North Queensland may be the largest known in the world, showcasing resilience amidst environmental challenges.
In a remarkable discovery off the coast of Cairns, Far North Queensland, a mother-daughter duo, Sophie Kalkowski-Pope and Jan Pope, identified a coral colony measuring 111 meters in length. This find is particularly significant as it may represent the largest known coral colony on Earth, amplifying both scientific interest and conservation efforts on the Great Barrier Reef. Their discovery occurred while participating in the Great Reef Census, a project spearheaded by the organization Citizens of the Reef, which encourages public participation in reef monitoring and conservation.
