Trump: 'I hope the war ends within a month' to Zelensky... Will a US-Russia-Ukraine summit take place?

Donald Trump expressed hope for the war in Ukraine to conclude within a month during a phone call with President Zelensky, who indicated the potential for a summit involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine.

On January 25, Donald Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressing his wish that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine concludes within a month. According to Axios, Zelensky highlighted the serious negotiations underway between both sides, thanking Trump for his involvement and support in seeking an end to the war. He also mentioned the possibility of a summit involving the leaders of the United States, Russia, and Ukraine that could elevate negotiations to a higher level. They discussed this following their previous face-to-face meeting at the Davos Forum last month.

During the call, which lasted about 30 minutes and included Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, Zelensky underscored the necessity of a step-by-step approach to resolving the complex and sensitive issues at hand. Reports suggest that Zelensky hopes for the war to end by the end of this year, while Trump agrees that the conflict has dragged on too long. Notably, Trump is reportedly willing to offer significant US security guarantees to Ukraine, reflecting a critical shift in US policy towards the conflict.

This development comes after the US, Russia, and Ukraine held their third round of ceasefire negotiations in Geneva on January 18, which failed to produce tangible outcomes due to persistent obstacles, particularly surrounding land disputes in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine. As negotiations stall, the upcoming discussions in Geneva involving both US and Russian officials are pivotal, as they may set the stage for potential breakthroughs or further roadblocks in achieving peace.
