UK anti-slavery watchdog calls for overhaul of adult sexual services sites

The UK anti-slavery watchdog urges major reforms of adult services websites after findings reveal they can facilitate the exploitation of sex workers.

The independent anti-slavery commissioner of the UK, Eleanor Lyons, has called for a significant overhaul of websites that advertise sexual services following an investigation that exposed them as potential 'accelerators' of exploitation for sex workers. While these platforms can offer some protection for individuals, the report reveals troubling details from the experiences of women who report being exploited on these sites. It emphasizes that the current measures in place are insufficient to safeguard those who work in the sex industry online.

This inspection, detailed in the report titled 'Behind the Profile: Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking Through Adult Services Websites', was based on data from 12 adult services websites and interviews with 12 survivors. The findings highlighted glaring gaps in existing legislation, particularly concerning women who work online through webcam services and those who advertise their sexual services on the internet before meeting clients in person. The report serves as a crucial wake-up call to reform policies governing these platforms to enhance protections against exploitation.

Lyons stresses the need for stronger regulatory measures to protect vulnerable individuals within these websites and has made specific recommendations aimed at improving safeguarding practices. The push for reform emphasizes the role of technology in complicating sex work and calls for a response that acknowledges the complexities of exploitation within the digital domain. As awareness grows about the risks posed by these online platforms, pressure mounts on lawmakers to act swiftly to ensure the safety and rights of sex workers across the UK.
