Saresp indicates recovery of learning in the region, but scores still do not reach pre-pandemic levels
Data from the Saresp assessment system show that while there is some recovery in learning outcomes among students in the Vale do Paraíba, scores remain below pre-pandemic levels, particularly in Language and Mathematics.
Recent data released by the Saresp, the School Performance Assessment System of the State of São Paulo, indicates a recovery in student learning in the Vale do Paraíba region. Although improvements have been noted compared to 2024, the results show that a significant number of students have yet to return to the academic performance levels seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. This situation reflects ongoing challenges in education recovery, particularly as schools aim to bridge the learning gaps exacerbated by the pandemic.
In the Regional Education Directorate of São José dos Campos, which includes the municipality of Monteiro Lobato, fifth-grade students averaged 215.7 points in Portuguese in 2025. While this score represents an improvement over the previous year's results, it remains below the pre-pandemic levels. Similarly, ninth-grade students also exhibited a similar trend, highlighting a consistent pattern that reflects the lingering impacts of the pandemic on students’ educational progress.
In the area of Mathematics, there were also noted improvements in average scores when compared to 2024, yet most scores still fall short of the pre-pandemic figures, with the exception of ninth-grade students, who achieved results that exceeded former benchmarks. This mixed performance underscores the complexity of the recovery efforts needed in Brazilian education, indicating that while progress is being made, it remains insufficient to fully counteract the disruptions caused by the pandemic prior to 2020.
