ECOWAS, AfDB inaugurate board for $15bn Lagos–Abidjan highway

The ECOWAS and the African Development Bank have established a Board of Directors for the $15 billion Lagos–Abidjan Highway project, marking a significant step in the project's operational phase.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have taken a major step towards the operationalisation of the $15 billion Lagos–Abidjan Highway project with the inauguration of a 10-member Board of Directors for the Abidjan–Lagos Corridor Management Authority. This significant event took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, during a two-day orientation session held on February 19 and 20, 2026, following the board's formal swearing-in in December 2025.

The inauguration of the board comes after the 22nd Ministerial Steering Committee meeting of the Abidjan–Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project, which underscores a pivotal transition from the planning stages to institutional implementation. The $15 billion infrastructure project is aimed at promoting regional integration and enhancing economic collaboration among the countries involved, which include Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.

This flagship infrastructure initiative, extending approximately 1,028 kilometers, is expected to facilitate trade, spur industrialisation, and drive socio-economic development across West Africa. By connecting major economic hubs in the region, the Lagos–Abidjan Highway is projected to significantly boost trade flow and foster economic ties, thereby addressing some of the region's key developmental challenges and enhancing overall connectivity.
