Collecting Trash to Get to Reyki
Students from Laugalækjarskóli are collecting trash in their community as a fundraising initiative for a school trip.
A group of seventh-grade students from Laugalækjarskóli are embarking on a unique fundraising initiative by collecting trash from public spaces in their neighborhood to finance their upcoming school trip to Reykjum. This initiative emerged during a meeting where students and their parents discussed various fundraising methods, emphasizing the desire to engage the community without imposing unnecessary items for sale. Ariana Katrín Katrínardóttir, a mother present at the meeting, highlighted the challenge of raising funds without pushing products onto people, finding a collaborative and environmentally friendly way to do so.
The idea was sparked by a parent's observation of the litter situation in Laugardalur, which led to the realization that cleaning up the area could serve a dual purpose: beautifying their surroundings while also providing much-needed funds for the trip. The students plan to spend a day picking up trash and collecting donations, showcasing a proactive approach to both fundraising and community service. This initiative not only aids their trip but fosters a sense of responsibility and pride among the students for their environment.
Such community-driven efforts resonate with broader societal themes of sustainability and environmental stewardship, particularly in the context of Iceland's stunning nature. The students' project is poised to inspire others to take similar initiatives, harnessing the power of teamwork and community involvement to address local issues while achieving their goals for the school trip, ultimately reflecting the collaborative spirit that Icelandic culture promotes.
