Iran has introduced a new type of aircraft carrier, the IRIS Shahid Bagheri, designed specifically to launch kamikaze drones. This vessel is the first of its kind in Iran's fleet and could significantly enhance Iran's operational capabilities against U.S. naval forces, particularly during times of heightened conflict. Experts, such as Ståle Ulriksen from the Naval War School, suggest that this ship would be a high-priority target for the U.S. in the event of a war with Iran.

The IRIS Shahid Bagheri, which became operational in February of last year, measures 240 meters in length and features a runway of approximately 175 meters, making it suitable for drone operations. U.S. military analysts have expressed concerns about the potential threat this vessel poses to American warships, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, highlighting its ability to launch attacks from relatively far distances.

The emergence of the IRIS Shahid Bagheri also underscores a broader trend, as countries such as China and Turkey have developed similar drone carriers. Despite its capabilities, Ulriksen notes the ship's limitations in terms of speed and visibility, which may impact its effectiveness in a real conflict scenario. Nevertheless, the introduction of this ship signifies a notable development in Iran's naval strategy and could escalate tensions in the region, particularly regarding U.S.-Iran relations.
