Volunteers rescue dogs, cats, and birds after floods in Juiz de Fora

Volunteers have rescued 35 animals, including dogs, cats, and birds, in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, following serious flooding.

In the aftermath of heavy rainfall that caused landslides in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, volunteers from the Disaster Animal Response Group (Grad) have been actively rescuing animals stranded in affected homes. A total of 35 animals, including dogs, cats, and birds, were saved from distressing situations where their owners could not evacuate with them or were not home during the disaster. Carla Sรกssi, the founder of Grad, highlighted the heart-wrenching circumstances facing residents who were forced to leave their pets behind, including a young child whose dog was also rescued.

The Grad team, consisting of 12 members including veterinarians, operates in triads to cover vast affected areas effectively. They respond to urgent calls for assistance from those who are either in temporary shelters or from nearby residents affected by the floods. In addition to reuniting rescued animals with their families, the group also makes arrangements for unnamed clinics and temporary homes for any animals unable to return home immediately, ensuring their safety and well-being until they can be reunited with their owners.

This initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of the animals but also provides vital emotional support to families distressed by the loss or separation from their pets. As the community continues to recover from this natural disaster, the work of volunteers like those in Grad illustrates the profound connection between people and their pets, and how this bond plays a significant role in the healing process during such crises.
