TCU gives 15 days for STF, STJ, and TST to justify exclusive VIP rooms at Brasília Airport

The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has given 15 days for the Supreme Federal Court, Superior Court of Justice, and Superior Labor Court to justify their exclusive VIP room contracts at Brasília International Airport.

The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has mandated that the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), and the Superior Labor Court (TST) provide justifications within 15 days for their contracts concerning exclusive VIP rooms at Brasília International Airport. These rooms, contracted from Inframérica—the consortium managing the airport—have raised concerns regarding their necessity and the financial implications of using public resources for VIP services.

The TCU's requirements for justification include the submission of copies of the contracts signed with Inframérica, technical reasons supporting the need for these exclusive spaces, and any relevant documentation that demonstrates the rationale for paying for the VIP areas. Importantly, the courts must also disclose whether they conducted feasibility studies to compare the use of exclusive VIP rooms versus public VIP rooms that charge reimbursement fees, thereby addressing whether their decisions are in the public interest.

The matter was brought to the TCU's attention through a representation by Dr. Hiran, the President of the Senate's Committee on Transparency, Governance, and Oversight, highlighting public concern over accountability and the appropriateness of using taxpayer money for such amenities. Depending on the responses provided by the courts, the TCU may initiate a specific audit to further investigate the circumstances surrounding these contracts and ensure transparent management of public funds.
