Orban Sends Army to Guard Energy Facilities in Hungary
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced the deployment of troops to protect energy infrastructure amid concerns over alleged Ukrainian plans to harm Hungary's energy system.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared on Wednesday that he has decided to deploy military forces to protect the nation's energy infrastructure. This decision follows allegations that Ukraine is planning actions intended to damage Hungary's energy system. The announcement was made after a meeting of the Defense Council, where Orban emphasized the necessity of taking precautionary measures in light of potential threats to national energy security.
Orban stated that he has ordered increased protection measures for energy facilities, which will include the deployment of military personnel to secure critical energy sites. He assured that the necessary resources would be allocated to prevent any attacks. Additionally, he noted that police patrols would be active around power stations, distribution facilities, and control centers to enhance safety and security in these strategic areas.
In a related move, Orban announced a ban on drone flights in the region bordering Ukraine, further illustrating the heightened security atmosphere. Previously, Hungary's Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, had remarked on the significance of the Druzhba oil pipeline, crucial for Russian oil supplies, demonstrating Hungary’s ongoing vigilance regarding its energy security amidst tensions in the region.
