Chrysochoidis: The Evros is impregnable, refugee flows have been reduced to zero

Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis claims that the Evros region is secure, with refugee flows completely halted and significant border patrol efforts underway.

In a recent discussion concerning the nation’s security at the New Democracy's second pre-conference held in Alexandroupolis, Greece, Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis asserted that the Evros region has become "impregnable," indicating that the flow of migrants and refugees has entirely ceased. He attributed this assurance to the construction of a 75-kilometer fence along the border, which is expected to expand further in the near future. The minister highlighted that a force of 1,200 border guards is currently tasked with the protection of the nation’s borders, suggesting a robust enforcement strategy.

Chrysochoidis also provided contextual data regarding past migration trends, noting that the peak of migration occurred between 2015 and 2016, with roughly 859,000 arrivals recorded. In stark contrast, he mentioned that asylum applications in regions such as the Eastern Aegean and Evros have witnessed a 60% decrease, plummeting from 48,000 in 2024-2025 to just 21,000 currently. He further revealed that there are currently 26,000 pending asylum applications, emphasizing a significant shift in the national response to migration issues over the years.

Additionally, the Minister underscored a reduction in domestic violence cases, with about 13,000 arrests made last year relating to such incidents across Greece. Chrysochoidis also noted that incidents of campus occupations and violence in sports venues have been eradicated, indicating a broader initiative toward enhancing societal safety in Greece. This multifaceted approach reflects the government’s commitment to both border security and domestic order, making strides towards a more secure environment for Greek citizens.
