Rep asks acting IG to probe attack on Obi’s convoy
A Nigerian lawmaker has urged the acting Inspector-General of Police to investigate an attack on Peter Obi's convoy that left vehicles damaged but spared the former presidential candidate.
Nigerian House of Representatives member Peter Uzokwe has called on the acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to carry out a thorough investigation into the recent attack on Peter Obi’s convoy. The incident occurred in Benin City, where unidentified gunmen reportedly shot at Obi’s vehicles as he approached the residence of former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun. Thankfully, Obi was unharmed, but several vehicles sustained damage during the attack.
Uzokwe, who represents the Nnewi North-South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in Anambra State, condemned the act as a severe threat to Nigeria's democracy. Addressing the media in Abuja, he emphasized that democracy should be characterized by healthy competition and dialogue, rather than violence and intimidation. His recent defection to the African Democratic Congress highlights the political tensions within Nigeria, underpinning the significance of the attack on Obi, a prominent figure in the opposition.
This incident underscores growing concerns regarding political violence in Nigeria, particularly during times of electoral competition. Uzokwe’s call for accountability and justice reflects a desire among lawmakers to maintain peace and integrity within the political landscape, as assaults on political figures pose significant risks to the stability of democracy in the country. It also raises questions about the safety of politicians in Nigeria and the effectiveness of law enforcement in responding to such threats.
