Rio Muriaé enters alert stage after heavy rains in Itaperuna

The Rio Muriaé in Itaperuna has entered an alert stage following significant rainfall that caused flooding in various neighborhoods.

The Rio Muriaé in Itaperuna, located in the Northwest Fluminense region of Brazil, has been put back into an alert stage after heavy rains caused widespread flooding in the area. On the night of Tuesday, September 24, a storm hit the city, leading to rapid inundation in numerous neighborhoods within just 15 minutes. As of the latest measurement, the river level reached 3.16 meters, with a flood risk level at 4 meters.

Prior to this recent storm, the municipality had already experienced disturbances during the weekend due to excessive rainfall, which resulted in roofs being blown off houses and fallen trees in several districts. The situation has raised concerns among local authorities, particularly regarding the risk of landslides, as the soil remains saturated from the precipitation. The National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (CENAD) has issued a moderate alert for the city, emphasizing the need for caution.

Daniel Bernardo, the municipal secretary of Civil Defense, mentioned that monitoring teams are actively observing high-risk areas. Residents have been advised to avoid slopes, banks, and locations known for previous landslide incidents to ensure their safety during this critical period. The ongoing weather conditions pose not only immediate risks but also longer-term implications for the local community as they deal with the aftermath of these natural disturbances.
