Iryo cuts 40 jobs until March 23 due to the suspension of the Madrid-Málaga route
Iryo has announced a temporary layoff of 40 employees until March 23 due to the suspension of its Madrid-Málaga train route caused by infrastructure issues.
Spanish rail operator Iryo has announced that it will temporarily lay off 40 employees, which constitutes 6% of its workforce, due to the suspension of the high-speed train route connecting Madrid and Málaga. This decision was influenced by a force majeure ruling accepted by the General Directorate of Labor, linked to infrastructure damage from recent storms that caused a landslide near Antequera, Málaga.
The suspension of the Madrid-Málaga route is expected to last until March 23, pending the reopening of train services, leading to operational adjustments at Iryo’s Málaga base. Despite the layoffs, the company intends to provide support to the affected employees by ensuring they receive 100% of their salaries during this period of unemployment.
This development highlights the challenges faced by transport companies in maintaining service continuity amidst unpredictable weather events and serves as a reminder of the broader impacts of climate-related disruptions on employment and operations within the rail industry in Spain.
