Fuel Supplies Running Low on Vormsi and Ruhnu Islands
Vormsi and Ruhnu islands are facing critical fuel shortages due to the closure of an official ice road, leaving them virtually without connection to the mainland.
The closure of the official ice road has left Vormsi Island essentially cut off, as the ferry OrmsΓΆ has been out of service for several weeks, leading to a critical fuel shortage on the island. Meanwhile, another small island, Ruhnu, is also running low on fuel supplies. Residents on both islands are calling for a more proactive response from the government amid these challenging conditions.
Previously, the ice roads served as effective alternatives for ferry traffic between Kihnu and Vormsi. However, due to rising water levels, these ice roads have now been closed, leaving Noorden's ferry service to Kihnu still operational but cutting off Vormsi completely. The ferry has not operated since February 6, and there is no clear indication of when it will resume service, creating anxiety among residents about their access to essential supplies.
Vormsi's mayor, Erki Savisaar, has expressed frustration over the lack of urgency from the government, especially as the situation worsens. With the ferry not moving for nearly three weeks and the official ice road just recently closed, local officials are calling for immediate solutions to address the fuel crisis and restore connectivity for residents who depend on these transport links.
